Child tosses glass bottle into trash can, family is shocked

Have you ever watched a friend gasp with horror because you tossed a recyclable item into your garbage bin? Maybe you were shocked as you visited Placer County and wondered why are there are no separate recycling bins anywhere?

We’ll let you in on a little secret … in Placer County, your garbage bin IS your recycling bin! 🤯

Does Placer County Recycle??

YES! Thanks to the Western Placer Waste Management Authority (WPWMA)’s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), EVERYONE in Placer County is recycling when they toss a glass bottle, an aluminum can, or a cardboard box into ANY garbage bin! That’s the magic of Placer Recycles!

There are three simple steps for how recycling works in Placer County:

  1. You Toss – Toss your trash in the garbage bin without sorting (we often call the garbage bin the “One Big Bin”).
  2. They Collect – On your pick up day, your hauler collects your waste and drops it off at the MRF.
  3. We Sort – When your waste arrives at the MRF, we begin sorting through it using machines, magnets, screens, robotics, hand sorting, and more to recover recyclable and compostable materials.

Impress Your Guests with Your One Big Bin!

For those of you lucky to live in Placer County, impress your out-of-town guests this holiday season with your “One Big Bin” – share how You Toss all your items into one garbage bin, your garbage hauler picks it up (They Collect) and drops it off at the MRF, and finally We Sort through 2 million pounds of garbage everyday at the MRF to recover valuable resources and reduce the amount of material that ends up disposed in the landfill.

See for Yourself!

If you need to see it to believe it, we provide tours of the MRF so you can see exactly how recycling happens in Placer County. Don’t have time to visit the MRF for a tour? We have a convenient Virtual Tour where you can watch the entire sorting process from home!
