What Should You Expect When You Come For a Tour?

Here’s what you need to know before your visit:

Nugget Markets Tour of WPWMAThis is a working facility, so we ask that you wear closed-toe shoes and full-length pants for safety. Please dress appropriately for indoor and outdoor areas and weather. We recommend sneakers or similar shoes as the tour involves approximately one mile of walking (and sometimes can get a little dirty).

We will provide additional safety gear, including hard hats, safety vests, and safety glasses.

When visiting the WPWMA for a tour, it’s important to remember that the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is located in an environment where numerous industrial activities take place. We want your tour to be a safe and enjoyable experience so we recommend watching this Tour Safety Video before attending a tour and being aware of the following safety reminders:

  1. Always stay with your tour guide and your tour group. If you need to leave for any reason, please alert your guide and they will guide you back when it is safe to do so.
  2. Keep all safety gear (including hard hats, vests, and eyewear) on at all times.
  3. Even though your tour guide is looking out for you, look both ways before crossing any roads, wait for vehicles to pass before crossing a road, and make eye contact with any drivers in your path.
  4. When using staircases always walk slowly and use the hand rails.
  5. Do not pick up any litter or items you may see on the ground or on equipment along your tour.
  6. Do not touch any of the equipment inside the MRF unless your tour guide lets you know it is okay.
  7. Avoid touching your face until you have had the opportunity to wash your hands.

Public and Business/Organization Tours
Before attending a tour, please review the Tour Waiver that is sent following your tour confirmation. Tour waivers must be signed and returned to the WPWMA by all attendees before going on your tour. Download Public Tour Waiver

School Tours
At this time, school tours are on pause due to construction constraints, however there is a separate waiver for students’ parents or guardians to sign before attending.

Want to know what you can expect to see on a WPWMA Tour? Check out our Tour Locations of Interest Map before your visit for an overview of some of the facilities you’ll learn more about on your tour. Given the WPWMA’s campus is an active industrial site, every tour’s route may look a little different. However, each tour will take you to (or discuss) all of these locations.
