Concrete bunker with overflowing brown compost soil with a green banner that says, "FREE COMPOST"

Customers can now pick up FREE compost from the Western Placer Waste Management Authority (WPWMA). Customers must bring their own containers and, if needed, shovels to collect and store the materials. Customers may take as much or as little compost as they would like.

The compost will be available at the WPWMA’s Public Disposal facilities (3195 Athens Ave., Lincoln) during normal business hours (7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends). The giveaway material is first come, first served and will be restocked as surplus material is available. This is intended to be an ongoing community resource for customers.

The WPWMA’s compost for giveaway is produced from residential and commercial green waste (yard clippings, tree trimmings, etc.) collected from across Placer County. This material is listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) and is safe for use in certified organic farming. For additional details on this compost, please review this Spec Sheet. For more information on OMRI, please visit their website.

Compost is a soil amendment that should be used as an addition to native or potting soils. Compost has several benefits for use in home gardens, including improving soil structure and porosity, creating a better plant root environment, increased moisture infiltration and permeability, reduced erosion and water runoff, allowing plants to utilize nutrients more effectively, enabling soils to retain nutrients longer, and more.

If you are interested in learning how to make compost yourself at home, the WPWMA offers quarterly Composting Workshops, designed to educate aspiring backyard composters on different composting methods, tools and skills needed to get started, troubleshooting tips, and more. Find additional information and register for an upcoming workshop HERE.
