WPWMA Staff using Nasal Ranger to measure odor levels at composting facility

The Western Placer Waste Management Authority is aware of a significant odor source that appears to be impacting Western Roseville and Rocklin residents. Upon an investigation and review of best operating practices, the WPWMA is confident that this odor is not originating from the WPWMA’s campus, but instead from a nearby farmland where manure was recently spread. This finding aligns with comments from complaints we have received.

Because this odor is not originating from our facility, the WPWMA has no ability to mitigate or prevent this odor and so we are asking community members to report this incident directly to the Placer Air Pollution Control District who has jurisdiction over these off-site odor incidents.

Pin Location and Odor Trajectory

Important to note that of potential odors that can travel offsite, only a minimal fraction actually comes from the landfill – it’s a highly engineered containment unit with multiple layers of environmental protection. The more likely odor source on our site would be our composting facility (which represents more than 70% of total facility odors that travel offsite), however we have made significant capital investment to reduce the odor potential from composting, learn more about these investments HERE.
