Learn the basics of backyard composting at WPWMA’s first free compost workshop!
Want to learn how to create your own compost for your garden at home? Take our first-ever FREE compost workshop and learn the basics of backyard composting.
This hands-on workshop will cover what composting is, why it matters, what materials can and can’t be composted, and how to start and maintain a compost system at home to benefit your backyard garden.
Attendees will also be able to purchase a home composting kit to help them get started in their backyard.

Who is this workshop for?
Whether you’re completely new to composting or have tried it before, this workshop is designed for beginners and anyone looking to improve their composting success.
Do I need any gardening experience?
No! Backyard composting can be for everyone – from folks with small yards to experienced gardeners looking to create healthier soil.
Will this workshop be hands-on?
Yes. Participants will have the opportunity to see composting materials, practice building a backyard compost bin, ask questions, and learn practical techniques you can use at home.
Should I bring anything?
A notebook is optional, but know that all participants will be given a “Composing Handbook” with instructions and room to write notes.
Why is WPWMA teaching home composting if food scraps (and other organic waste) get sorted out and composted for us at the MRF?
Even though our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) recovers more than 75% of the organic waste (food scraps & soiled paper products) that our community throws away and composts it at our commercial facility, backyard composting is a great way to create a valuable soil amendment right where its needed for folks who are looking to go above and beyond with their home gardening!
