class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>2025 Regional Odor Issue<\/h2><p><strong>Update November 2, 2025<\/strong> &#8211; We are aware that there has been a significant increase in the western Placer region. Upon investigation and a review of best practices, the WPWMA has determined that this regional odor is NOT originating from the WPWMA&#8217;s campus but instead from a farm north west of our facility that recently spread a significant amount of manure.<\/p><p>Over the last several years, in addition to ensuring best practices described in the SWOP are followed daily, the WPWMA has also invested heavily in odor reduction technologies and infrastructure to be an even better neighbor to nearby residents and businesses:<\/p><ul><li>As part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wpwma.ca.gov\/facts-on-the-wpwmas-120-million-state-of-the-art-facility-improvements\/\">facility improvements project<\/a>, the WPWMA has a new ColdOx machine that kills odor causing agents (known as Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs)<\/li><li>Food scraps are now composting using a method called Covered Aerated Static Pile (CASP) composting, which can reduce odor potential by more than 90% through completely covered composting and underground aeration trenches.<\/li><li>Green waste is now composted using Aerated Static Pile (ASP) composting which can reduce odor potential by up to 84% compared to traditional &#8220;windrow&#8221; composting.<\/li><li>The WPWMA is part of a UC Davis and California Air Resources Board (CARB) study looking at best practices and new tools to further decrease emissions from landfills. While the study is still ongoing, we are seeing promising results from the WPWMA&#8217;s landfill.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3fea8a1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3fea8a1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"1\" data-uw-rm-heading=\"level\">What You Can Do:<\/h3><ol><li>\u00a0Instead of reporting this odor to the WPWMA, please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.placerair.org\/1692\/Complaints\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.placerair.org\/1692\/Complaints\">report it to the Placer Air Pollution Control District<\/a> who has jurisdiction over investigating off-site odor incidents.
